No more 'smalling up' of me

No more meekly saying yes
when my heart is screaming no
No more taming of my feelings
so my power won't show
No more hiding my exuberance
from disapproving eyes
No more watering down myself
so my spirit won't rise

No more 'smalling up' of me
pretending I'm not here
No more running from the music
and the spotlight's glare
No more living in this prison
barricaded by my fears
No more turning and retreating
in the face of new frontiers.

Even as I am speaking
I am taking shape and form
harnessing my powers
like a gathering storm
There's no obstacle so bold
as to dare stand in my way
I am taking back my life
and I am doing it today.

Love it! It's about time girl!(ehhhhh, for me too!). Its strange how fears can hold us back from doing so much in life, and the funny thing is that most of the time, its really not "fears" that we have put upon ourself, but rather, fears that others have put upon us. Family, friends, society, old teachers, ex-boyfriends, etc. There is an Ibo proverb that says " A woman carries the burden of the world on her shoulders", sometimes I think I carry the burden of others' fears on my shoulders!

I LOVE the end..."I'm taking back my life and I'm doing it today..."

Is someone out of postables? Yu need another holiday?

UndaCovaSista said...

@waffarian - that proverb is so true. I think its in our nature to want to please everyone, but we cant cos it's impossible and when we dont, we beat ourselves up for failing. That's why i love this poem so much...

@Jaycee - AMEN sister!

@bighead - Lol! Never! I've still got days 2, 3 and 4 of the Marrakech files to come...
